Cataloguing

This is something I made up when I was a child, and I’ve never met it in a ‘How to write’ book, but I always had a lot of fun with it so I’m going to recommend it to anyone who like to have some easy fun! Find any catalogues you have in your home – it doesn’t matter what they’re for. Have a look through with a blue pen and circle the stuff you’d really like. Now think of a character you want to write about. Take a different colour pen and go through the catalogue again, circling the things they would choose. Notice as you go though, why you think they would like those things. That’ll tell you a lot about who they are, and it’ll also make you see them as someone different to yourself. You know what you like – but they’ve made different choices to you. By giving them choices, you’ve given them feet of their own – now watch them walk into their own story!
